As dermatology providers, one of the most common concerns we hear from patients is about visible pores—especially on the nose, cheeks, and forehead. Pores are small openings in the skin that allow oil and sweat to reach the surface. Each pore is connected to a sebaceous (oil) gland and a hair follicle. While everyone has them, their size and visibility can vary based on genetics, skin type, and age. When pores become clogged with oil, dead skin cells, or debris, they can appear larger and more noticeable.

Fortunately, there are effective ways to keep pores clean and minimize their appearance without irritating the skin. Gentle exfoliation is key. Chemical exfoliants like salicylic acid, a beta hydroxy acid (BHA), can penetrate the pore lining and help dissolve oil and dead skin buildup. Unlike harsh physical scrubs, salicylic acid works below the surface, making it an excellent option for keeping pores clear while reducing the risk of inflammation or microtears in the skin.

I always love to recommend Hamilton DermaScience Gentle Exfoliating Cleanser and the HDS Daily Clarifying Toner Pads. Another option is HDS Salaza Weekly Pads for a mild chemical peel at home.

Remember, minimizing pores isn’t about making them disappear (that’s a myth!)—it’s about keeping them clean and allowing your skin to function at its best. Pairing salicylic acid with daily sun protection and gentle moisturizers can enhance your skin’s overall tone, texture, and clarity. If you have questions about which products are right for your skin type, we’re always here to help guide you.
