Could a Daily Drink Help Support Your Skin’s Defense Against Sun Damage?

Most people know that sunscreen is essential for protecting skin from harmful UV rays, but researchers continue to explore ways to support skin health from the inside out. Sun Powder is a dermatologist-developed supplement drink mix that combines several ingredients commonly used in dermatology, including nicotinamide, collagen peptides, hyaluronic acid, glutathione, astaxanthin, and Polypodium leucotomos extract. These ingredients are intended to complement—not replace—traditional sun protection measures such as sunscreen, protective clothing, and shade.

One of the most studied ingredients in oral photoprotection is Polypodium leucotomos, a tropical fern native to Central and South America. Research has shown that this antioxidant-rich extract may help reduce some of the damaging effects of ultraviolet radiation by limiting oxidative stress, decreasing inflammation, and supporting the skin’s natural DNA repair processes after sun exposure. Several studies have demonstrated that Polypodium leucotomos can increase the skin’s resistance to UV-induced damage, making it a popular recommendation among dermatologists for patients with sun-sensitive skin conditions and those seeking additional support against photoaging.

Another notable ingredient is astaxanthin, a powerful antioxidant naturally found in certain algae and seafood such as salmon and shrimp. Astaxanthin has attracted attention for its ability to neutralize free radicals generated by UV exposure and environmental stressors. Early studies suggest that it may help improve skin hydration, elasticity, and overall skin appearance while also reducing oxidative damage that contributes to premature aging. Although more research is ongoing, astaxanthin is considered one of the most potent naturally occurring antioxidants used in skin health supplements today.

While the science behind oral photoprotection continues to evolve, these ingredients highlight an exciting area of dermatology focused on supporting the skin from within. Products such as Sun Powder may offer an additional layer of defense against environmental damage, but they should always be used as part of a comprehensive sun-protection strategy. Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen, regular skin examinations, and healthy sun habits remain the cornerstone of maintaining healthy skin and reducing the risk of skin cancer and premature aging.  If you are interested in trying Sun Powder, we have the unflavored and the lemon-lime for sale in our office and online.
